Design Consulting

Leather, stone, tile and textile samples laid out on a work table during material selection

Who this is for

  • You have a room, or a floor, that has never quite resolved and you cannot name why.
  • You are mid-project and want a second set of eyes before you commit to the expensive decisions.
  • You are capable of executing yourself and want the plan, the palette, and the sequence handed to you.
  • You are considering a larger commission and want to work with us once before you do.

This is not the right service if you want us to run the project. That is Renovation. Consulting produces a plan; it does not include ongoing project management, procurement, or contractor coordination.

What is included

Before the session

A questionnaire about the house, how your family uses it, what you have tried, and what you are working toward. We review photographs, plans, and any measurements you have. This is not a formality — the quality of the session is set by what we know before we arrive.

The working session

Two hours in your home. We walk the space together and talk in specifics: layout, circulation, scale, light, color, what stays, what goes, and what the room is for. You should bring your questions and your list. Nothing is off limits.

What you receive afterward

Written notes and recommendations covering:

  • A design direction for the spaces reviewed
  • Paint and finish recommendations with specific product names
  • Layout and furniture-plan guidance for the rooms discussed
  • A prioritized sequence — what to do first, what can wait, what not to spend money on
  • Sourcing direction — where to look, and what to avoid

The consultation is a fixed piece of work: two hours on site and one set of written recommendations. It does not include revision rounds. If you want the direction developed, drawn, specified, and bought, that is a full commission.

How the engagement runs

01. Discovery Call

A free thirty-minute call, by phone, to confirm the scope is right for a consultation and to answer your questions about how we work.

02. Booking

$450 books the session and holds the date. Consulting sessions are scheduled around active project work, and we can usually get to you within about two weeks.

03. Questionnaire

Sent on booking. Return it, with photographs, before the session.

04. The session in your home

Two hours, on site.

05. Written direction delivered

Your notes and recommendations follow the session. No revision rounds are included; the consultation delivers one considered point of view rather than an open-ended conversation.

Investment

The design consultation is $450.

That covers the questionnaire review, two hours in your home, and the written notes and recommendations that follow. It is a flat fee, not a scoped one, and there is no minimum project size attached to it.

If you go on to commission a full project, the $450 is credited toward your retainer.

Questions about consulting

Can we hire you for the full project afterward?

Yes. Many clients use a consultation as a trial run. If you move to a full commission, the $450 is credited toward your retainer.

How far do you travel for consultations?

Much of our work is in Greater Cleveland — Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, Chagrin Falls, Gates Mills, Hunting Valley, and Bratenahl among them. We will travel further for the right project; travel is billed to the project and we agree it with you before anything is booked.

Can you do this over Zoom?

No. We do not offer remote or e-design services. The consultation happens in the house, because the problems in a room are usually about scale and light and neither of those photographs well.

How do we communicate during the process?

Email, phone, Zoom, and in person, Monday through Friday, 9am to 7pm. We ask clients not to use text messages — it fragments the record of a project and things get lost.

Tell us about the home.

Every project starts the same way: thirty minutes on the phone, no charge and no pitch. You tell us about the house and what is not working in it, and we tell you honestly whether we are the right studio for it. Most of our clients come back afterwards — for the next room, or the next house, or the one by the lake. We would rather begin something that lasts than close something that does not.
