About

Three of us, and a studio on Detroit Avenue.

Rob and Adam walking through the Him and His studio on Detroit Avenue

HIM&HIS Design is a residential interior design studio at 5900 Detroit Avenue, in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood of Cleveland. Rob and Adam founded it in 2020. We design homes for people who intend to stay in them.

We take a limited number of projects each year. That is a deliberate constraint, not a marketing line — it is why a retainer exists, why our calendar books ahead, and why the person you meet on the Discovery Call is the person on your project.

Every house starts with questions rather than images. Questionnaires, meetings, and brainstorming sessions early in the process tell us who lives in the house and how. The concept comes out of that. It is why our projects do not resemble each other.

We work in email, phone calls, Zoom, and in person, Monday through Friday, 9am to 7pm. We ask clients not to text. A house generates hundreds of decisions and every one of them should still be findable in month nine.

Rob

Co-Founder & Creative Director

Rob's background is in hospitality and real estate. Before there was a studio there were years spent walking through other people's houses alongside investors — watching which rooms made someone stop in the doorway, and which ones they moved through without looking up.

You learn something particular doing that, and it is not taste. It is which decisions hold and which ones were only ever a trend wearing a good finish. The houses that worked were rarely the newest or the most expensive. They were the ones where somebody had thought about where the light landed, where people put things down on the way in, and what the room would still be doing in twenty years.

He co-founded the studio with Adam in 2020 to work on that side of a house rather than sell the result of it.

Adam

Co-Founder & CEO

Adam came to interiors by a longer route. Years in hospitality and events, designing weddings across northeast Ohio — work that runs on a date which cannot move, in rooms that have to hold up under a hundred people arriving at once.

That teaches you to plan backwards. You start at the hour when everything has to be right and work in reverse until you know what has to be true on a Tuesday in March. New construction came next, and the habit carried — drawings, trades and schedules, and the long gap between what is drawn and what actually gets built. Something has to be ordered, confirmed and standing in the right room months before anyone thinks to look for it.

He founded the studio with Rob in 2020 and runs it. Between the two backgrounds, he tends to see the logistics of a project before anyone else in the room does.

Kay

Lead Designer

Kay grew up in the industry — around the work before she chose it, which is a different way into a career than picking it off a list at nineteen. She studied it properly at Kent State.

She leads design on our projects: the drawings, the selections, and the detail that decides whether a room reads as considered or merely finished. Most of that detail is invisible when it goes right. It is the dimension checked twice, the finish held to rather than substituted, the problem caught on paper in April instead of in a room in September.

She also owns Delivery by the Falls, the receiving warehouse every one of our orders passes through, which means the person specifying your furniture is the same person accountable for it arriving intact — inspected, stored, and released when the house is ready for it. That is not a common arrangement, and it is a large part of why installation day goes the way it does.

Our office and the room where we meet clients, in the Detroit–Shoreway neighbourhood on Cleveland’s near west side. It is a working studio rather than a shop — samples, drawings and furniture on their way somewhere else. Visits are by appointment.

Tell us about the home.

Every project starts the same way: thirty minutes on the phone, no charge and no pitch. You tell us about the house and what is not working in it, and we tell you honestly whether we are the right studio for it. Most of our clients come back afterwards — for the next room, or the next house, or the one by the lake. We would rather begin something that lasts than close something that does not.
